Blue Chip Casino Hotel Spa history

Blue Chip began as a riverboat casino sailing Lake Michigan, opening its doors on Aug. 22, 1997. The Las Vegas-based Boyd Gaming Corporation acquired the property in 1999, joining the market of casinos near Chicago.

The property began as a gaming boat, expanding multiple times since. A third deck was added in 1998. After the Boyd Gaming acquisition, a hotel was added to the property in 2000. Then came a major expansion of the third level in 2002, pushing the overall gaming space to more than 42,000 square feet.

In 2006, the original vessel was replaced altogether by a new single-level casino containing 65,000 square feet of gaming space. A couple more years of construction followed, and a new 22-story hotel tower was opened in 2009, at which time the property adopted the name Blue Chip Casino Hotel Spa.

Today, Blue Chip is considered one of the favorite casinos in the Chicago area, providing a Vegas-like experience right in the heart of the Midwest.
