Former State Senator Admits To Role In Indiana Casino Scandal

On Monday, Brent Waltz, a former state senator from Indiana, confessed to his involvement in a political money funneling scheme. This scheme led to the scandal involving the Spectacle Entertainment casino.

The whole fiasco lasted for months and ultimately caused significant issues for gambling in Indiana.

While Waltz may have accepted a plea deal, his reputed accomplice in the plot is still set for trial next week.

Waltz takes plea agreement

Waltz confessed to channeling $40,500 in illegal contributions towards his failed 2015 congressional campaign as part of his agreement with prosecutors. He also acknowledged lying to the FBI.

Each of those charges could result in a five-year prison sentence for Waltz, but his plea agreement will likely prevent harsh sentencing.

John Keeler, a former executive at Centaur Gaming, is alleged to have assisted in crafting the plan. During this period, Centaur managed Harrah's Hoosier Park and Indiana Grand Casino.

According to prosecutors, Keeler and Centaur were responsible for providing the illegal contributions.

Prosecutors allege that Keeler funneled money through a Maryland political consultant in an attempt to obscure his actions. They further claim that the consultant then redistributed this money to repay straw donors who had made contributions to Waltz’s campaign.

Centaur Gaming has ceased to exist, however, when the scheme was unveiled, many of its previous executives were in charge at Spectacle Entertainment. During this period, Spectacle was preparing to construct the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana.

Spectacle Jack, a subsidiary of Spectacle Entertainment, was also initiating the construction of a casino in Terre Haute.

The state’s gambling industry faced massive problems due to the situation.

To cut a long story short, a federal indictment against the pair and an investigation by the Indiana Gaming Commission eventually clarified the situation.

Despite everything, the supposed scheme of Waltz and Keeler caused numerous issues. This entire ordeal has been persisting since January 2020, thus it was not an easily surmountable obstacle for Indiana.

The situation may finally be reaching a conclusion now that Waltz has accepted a deal and Keeler is on his way to trial.

The situation in Indiana has been mostly resolved for some time now.

The Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana in Gary is now operational. Meanwhile, Churchill Downs has taken over the Terre Haute project and is on the verge of commencing construction on the Queen of Terre Haute Casino.

Initially, Terre Haute’s casino was slated to be in operation by now. However, the delay in construction commencement clearly demonstrates the disruptive impact of the Spectacle scandal.

The situation also affected other areas of gambling.

For two years, Indiana has been attempting to legalize online casinos. However, due to scandal concerns, this endeavor has not been successful.

Though the scandal may be contained within the Hoosier State, its repercussions continue to be felt today. Keeler’s trial may still be in its early stages, but the majority of Indiana’s gaming sector has managed to progress.
