How did the Pacers do last year?

Despite a litany of injuries to the roster, the Indiana Pacers were competitive throughout the 2020-21 NBA season.

The Pacers finished 34-38—good for 2nd in the Central Division. The team managed to slide into the play-in tournament, only to run into a red-hot Washington Wizards team.

It was a solid matchup for Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook. The duo easily defeated Indiana in their regular season matchups, and Washington had plenty of momentum behind them heading into the tournament. The Pacers ended up losing their matchup 142-115, which ended their season.

Things might not have ended up the way that fans wanted them to, but there's plenty of optimism about the future. Last year's squad was riddled with significant injuries. Myles Turner and Jeremy Lamb missed large stretches of the year. TJ Warren almost missed the entire season after becoming one of the standout stars of the Orlando bubble the year before. Caris LeVert missed heavy time due to cancer surgery.

The Pacers will be running it back for the most part with last season's roster. The biggest addition to the team is Chris Duarte, who the team drafted with their first round pick.

The team also has a new head coach coming to town. Well, new depending on how you look at it. Rick Carlisle is the new head man for the Pacers after coming over from the Dallas Mavericks. Carlisle originally coached the Pacers from 2003-2007, so this is his second go-around with the team.

Vegas odds on the Pacers

Pundits still point to the Vegas odds on Pacers games out of habit. The truth is most lines open the same at Indiana sportsbooks as they do in Vegas. Where they may differ is in how they change.

Lines are set to draw an equal amount of betting to both sides. That way, sportsbooks can realize a consistent vig and have no reason to sweat the outcome of any game. When more money comes in on one side somewhere, that sportsbook will move the line to try to even out the betting again. There’s more interest in Pacers games in Indiana than there is in Vegas.

More betting interest means more money bet, making the chances more money is bet on one side much greater in Indiana. That means the lines are more likely to change ahead of tip-off here in Indiana than they are in Las Vegas.

  • Who will lead the Pacers in scoring?
  • Will Caris Levert score more than 25 points Y or N?
  • Will Domantas Sabonis grab 12 rebounds or more?

How to read Indiana Pacers betting lines

Pacers betting lines at top Indiana online and mobile sportsbook normally look a lot like this:

Indiana Pacers +3.5 (-110 ) +155 O 203.5 (-110)
LA Lakers -3.5 (-110) -175 U 203.5 (-110)

Spread

The first set of numbers represents the spread with the odds posted in brackets.

If the Pacers are 3.5-point underdogs to the Lakers, spread bets on the Pacers will win if they win, or lose by less than three. That makes the Lakers 3.5-point favorites and means for spread bets on LA to win if the Lakers win by four or more.

Either way, at -110 odds, you’ll win $100, plus your original bet back, for every $110 you bet.

Moneyline

The second set of numbers represents the moneyline.

If the Pacers are +155 underdogs, every $100 you bet on the Pacers will pay $155, plus your bet back, if the Pacers win the game. If the Lakers are -175 favorites, every $175 you bet on the Lakers will pay $100, plus your bet back, if the Lakers win.

Total

The final set of numbers represent the totals line with the odds posted in brackets.

This is a bet on whether the total combined Pacers-Lakers score will be over or under 203.5 points. Either way, if you’re right, you win $100, plus your bet back, for every $110 you bet.

Most popular NBA bets

nba bettingIt could be confusing at first to look at a sports betting site with so many different wager options on the board. Here's a quick list of the most popular NBA bet types at a glance:

  • Point Spread – The point spread is a wager in which you bet on teams to cover a projected margin of victory.
  • Moneyline – The money line is any wager in which you put money down picking an outright winner.
  • Total – The totals bet is essentially a chance to pick whether the final score for a game will be “OVER” or “UNDER” a specific total. If the teams combine to score more points than the number listed by the sportsbook, then the “OVER” hits. If the teams combine to score less points than the total listed, then the “UNDER” hits.
  • Futures – The futures wager is any type of bet in which the outcome will not be known for an extended amount of time. These types of wagers could include anything from betting on Indiana to win an NBA championship to odds to win a division or regular season win totals. It takes a while for futures odds to be finalized. However, if you are willing to wait it out the potential is there to make some serious money betting NBA futures.
  • Parlay – The parlay is any type of wager ticket that features two or more of the bet types listed in this column at the same time. Whether it’s a point spread and a money line bet on the same ticket, or a money line wager and a total on the same parlay, every team listed on these tickets must win in order for the parlay to be considered a winner. If even one team on the ticket loses, then the entire parlay is considered a loser.
  • Props – There are prop bets that focus on individual performances and prop bets that focus on team performances. An example of an individual performance prop bet would be betting on the number of points a player will score in a game. An example of a team performance prop bet would be putting money down on how many three-point shots a team scores in a game. Prop bets are an excellent tool for those looking to bet on a game without actually caring about which side wins outright or how many points the teams combine to score in any given contest.

Brief history of the Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers were an American Basketball Association franchise established in 1967. The team joined the NBA as part of the ABA–NBA merger in 1976. The Pacers won three ABA titles and reached the NBA Finals in 2000, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

Hall of Famer Reggie Miller was the star of that team and some of the best Pacers teams in franchise history. Miller played 18 NBA seasons, all with Indiana Pacers. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest three-point shooters in league history. Despite Miller retiring, and the team's small-market status, the Pacers have remained competitive throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

The franchise has developed a reputation for putting well-coached teams on the floor who truly adopt the team concept rather than rely on free-agent stars.

In the team’s history they have featured six different Hall of Fame players:

  • Reggie Miller
  • Chris Mullin
  • Alex English
  • Mel Daniels
  • Roger Brown
  • George McGinnis

Indiana Pacers FAQ

Real estate developer Herb Simon owns the Pacers. He lives in Indianapolis and has vowed to keep the team in his hometown as long as he lives.

Forbes says the Indiana Pacers are worth approximately $1.525 billion in 2020. That makes them 22nd among the NBA's 30 teams and a truly small-market team compared to the No. 1 New York Knicks, valued at $4.6 billion.

You can get into a Pacers game for as little as $10, but the average price is $89. That’s quite affordable by NBA standards, even though courtside seats go for $600 apiece.

The Pacers have been in the NBA since the 1976-77 season and have made the playoffs 27 times. This includes making the playoffs and losing in the first round for the past five straight seasons. The Pacers missed the 2014–15 NBA playoffs after losing in the Eastern Conference Finals the prior season.

The Pacers have retired five jersey numbers, including:

  • 30 George McGinnis
  • 31 Reggie Miller
  • 34 Melvin Joe Daniels

Nothing says Indianapolis quite like the Indy 500. So, the Pacers take their name from the Indianapolis 500 pace cars. Plus, Indiana also has a rich harness racing history, so the name applies to those pacers as well.
