PointsBet’s New NBA Partnership Should Help In Indiana, But First It Has To Launch

This week, an announcement was made that PointsBet has secured a multi-year agreement to become an authorized sports betting operator for the NBA.

The renowned sports betting brand collaborated with the NBA, in partnership with companies like William Hill and DraftKings.

In a press statement, Johnny Aitken, PointsBet USA CEO, expressed the team’s enthusiasm about their partnership with the NBA, a league known for its progressive approach. As a technology-driven company, PointsBet sees a convergence of their objectives with the NBA, particularly in providing the best experience for fans.

PointsBet will not only accept bets on NBA games, but will also provide a win probability metric.

The statement indicates that the league will utilize the metric on NBA.com and its social media platforms.

PointsBet gains more momentum in Indiana through NBA deal

Over the past summer, a partnership was announced between PointsBet and Penn National, a casino operator in Indiana.

This agreement appoints PointsBet as the official operator of the land-based sportsbook at Penn’s Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg property.

This partnership would secure PointsBet’s safety for 20 years.

The sportsbook at the Lawrenceburg casino is currently operational and taking bets on 13 various sports. The types of bets it accepts are as follows:

  • Straight bets
  • Parlays
  • Matchups
  • Futures
  • Props
  • In-play

It is anticipated that PointsBet will eventually take control of the land-based book’s operations. This transition is expected to align with the introduction of online and mobile sports betting.

The Australian-based operator, PointsBet, has made substantial headway towards their Indiana launch this past month, even without a definitive rollout timeline. The Indiana Gaming Commission granted a temporary vendor license to PointsBet in January.

The success of Hollywood Casino’s handle is influenced by the operator’s experience.

Over the past eighteen months, more than twelve states have enacted or legalized sports betting. Among these states, PointsBet has commenced operations in New Jersey and Iowa.

Allen Iverson, a former NBA guard known for his fiery personality, was appointed as a company ambassador to enhance brand recognition.

Consequently, PointsBet is entering 2020 with significant momentum. The growing brand awareness of PointsBet is poised to provide benefits for Indiana.

Specifically, the launch of PointsBet is anticipated to increase the handle for the sportsbook at Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg.

The Indiana Gaming Commission has reported that Hollywood Lawrenceburg had a handle of $7.7 million in January. The property’s close location to Cincinnati appears to positively influence its retail handle. However, in order to compete with other properties that are producing greater revenues, they need to consider entering the online market.

Four casinos are outperforming Hollywood, and three of these have collaborations with sports betting operators.

  • At the Ameristar Casino Hotel in East Chicago, DraftKings
  • Blue Chip Casino Hotel Spa is the location of FanDuel.
  • French Lick: BetRivers

The launch of PointsBet is expected to enhance the handle of Hollywood Casino. The collaboration between PointsBet and the NBA also promises to benefit Hollywood Casino. Importantly, in Indiana, basketball had the highest handle among all sports in January.

The partnership between PointsBet and the NBA is expected to result in an increase in bets during the NBA and NCAA seasons. However, PointsBet’s main focus should be on launching its online betting application in Indiana.
