History of French Lick Resort Casino

The French Lick Springs Hotel, first constructed in 1845, expanded over the following years as golf courses were developed in the nearby area. The property, which eventually encompassed the West Baden Springs Hotel, saw multiple changes in ownership throughout the latter part of the 20th century. Finally, in 2005, the Cook Group, Inc. from Bloomington assumed control of the property.

At the time, riverboat gambling had just become legal in Indiana. Donald Trump, who was among the first to acquire a casino license, intended to construct a casino resort in French Lick. Nevertheless, Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts declared bankruptcy only a few weeks later, resulting in the project never getting off the ground.

The Cook Group spearheaded a partnership known as Blue Sky Casino LLC, and they were granted the unutilized French Lick license. This led to the temporary closure of the associated hotels during the construction of the casino. However, they reopened in time for the grand inauguration of French Lick Resort Casino on November 3, 2006. While technically located in a pond and not on a river, the new French Lick Casino earned the popular nickname, “boat on a moat.”
