The Horseshoe Hammond Casino, originally known as Empress Casino Hammond, first began operations in June 1996. It was a riverboat casino established by Illinois-based investors, serving as a sister property to Empress Casino in Joliet. In 1999, Jack Binion’s Horseshoe Gaming Holding Corporation purchased both properties. Later, in 2001, the Horseshoe company sold the Joliet casino to Argosy Gaming Company but retained the Hammond property, renaming it Horseshoe Hammond in May 2001.

In 2004, Harrah’s Entertainment acquired the property and soon initiated substantial expansions. The property was converted into a stationary barge overlooking Lake Michigan, and the new casino was inaugurated in August 2008. Later, Harrah’s was rebranded as Caesars Entertainment. In 2017, the casino’s ownership shifted to Vici Properties, though Caesars continued to operate it.
