The property now known as Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg began as a riverboat casino. It opened as the Argosy Casino on Dec. 13, 1996, one of several riverboat casinos operated by the Argosy Gaming Company on the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri rivers.

The Argosy Casino was a joint venture between Argosy and the Indiana Gaming Company. The three-level boat measured more than 400 feet in length and contained almost 75,000 square feet of gaming space. At one time, this Ohio River spot was the largest riverboat casino in the country.

In 2004, Penn National Gaming (now Penn Entertainment) acquired the Argosy Gaming Company, taking over casino operations. A major expansion was soon undertaken, and in 2009 the original Argosy boat was replaced with an even larger one, a new $336 million property renamed Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg. The new casino had nearly doubled the gaming space of the previous one and could handle as many as 9,000 passengers at a time.

Like many other original Indiana riverboat casinos, Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg no longer sets sail but operates as a land-based property on the edge of the Ohio River.
