Blue Chip, a riverboat casino initially sailing Lake Michigan, first opened on August 22, 1997. In 1999, the property was acquired by the Las Vegas-based Boyd Gaming Corporation, thereby marking its entry into the market of casinos in proximity to Chicago.

The property originally started as a gaming boat and has undergone several expansions since then. In 1998, a third deck was added. Following its acquisition by Boyd Gaming, a hotel was added to the property in 2000. In 2002, there was a significant expansion of the third level, which increased the total gaming area to over 42,000 square feet.

In 2006, a new single-level casino, containing 65,000 square feet of gaming space, completely replaced the original vessel. After a couple more years of construction, a new 22-story hotel tower was inaugurated in 2009. It was at this time the property was renamed as Blue Chip Casino Hotel Spa.

Blue Chip is currently regarded as one of the most preferred casinos in the Chicago area, offering a Vegas-style experience in the Midwest’s core.
