Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing & Casino history

The Hoosier Park pari-mutuel racing facility first opened in September 1994 to great fanfare, with the first-ever Indiana Derby run there in 1995. The track was owned by Churchill Downs, the first outside of Kentucky hosted by the company.

In 2007, Centaur Gaming acquired the track from Churchill Downs. When Indiana lawmakers authorized racetracks to add slot machines soon after, the facility was renovated into a racino. With approximately 1,900 slot machines and electronic table games newly installed, the property reopened as the Hoosier Park Casino in June 2008. The popularity of the new racino was proven right away with more than 10,000 visitors coming to gamble that very first day.

The number of slots soon increased close to the 2,000-slot machine maximum allowed at Hoosier Park. It remained there for several years until 2018 when the number of slots was scaled back to about 1,600. The 2020 pandemic then saw that number cut in half. Afterward, the facility settled on just under 1,300 slot machines and about 30 table games.

Meanwhile, Caesars Entertainment acquired Hoosier Park from Centaur Gaming in 2018, and the following year the property was rebranded to Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. That transaction also involved Caesars acquiring the former Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in Shelbyville, subsequently renamed Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Currently, the casino is undergoing yet another expansion to add 38,000 square feet to accommodate 100 more slot machines and 25 more table games. The expansion will also entail another new restaurant and bar.
