The History of Harrah’s Hoosier Park Racing & Casino

The Hoosier Park pari-mutuel racing facility first opened its doors to much acclaim in September 1994, and hosted the inaugural Indiana Derby in 1995. The track was a property of Churchill Downs, marking this as the company’s first venture outside of Kentucky.

Centaur Gaming took over the track from Churchill Downs in 2007. Indiana legislators subsequently approved racetracks to incorporate slot machines, leading to the facility’s transformation into a racino. Following the installation of approximately 1,900 slot machines and electronic table games, the property was re-launched as the Hoosier Park Casino in June 2008. The racino’s popularity was instantly evident, with over 10,000 visitors flocking to gamble on its opening day.

Hoosier Park soon neared its maximum capacity of 2,000 slot machines as the number of slots increased. This quantity was maintained for several years before being reduced to roughly 1,600 in 2018. The 2020 pandemic caused a further reduction, halving the number of slots. After the pandemic, the facility stabilized with just under 1,300 slot machines and approximately 30 table games.
